How To Run the Best 5km of Your Life

How to Run the Best 5km of Your Life

We’re excited to announce that this Friday night, 24th January, we’ll be hosting our inaugural 5km Club Championships under lights at the iconic University of Queensland Athletics Track in St Lucia, here in Brisbane, Australia. It’s going to be a night to remember, as registered entrants have been training hard for this moment, pitting themselves against one another to see who comes out on top.

To help you prepare for the big race and achieve your best, we’ve put together this guide on how to approach your 5km like a pro.

This event is brought to you by Fitazgym and Run Vault. We’d also like to take this opportunity to recognise our incredible sponsors who make events like this possible, providing at event gear to use along with prizes for podium finishers and : On Running, Pure Sports Nutrition, lululemon, Goodr, and our club partner Got The Runs. Thank you for your support!

The First Kilometre: Controlled but Confident

When the race begins, it’s natural to feel the adrenaline pumping and the urge to sprint off the line. Resist that temptation! A fast start might feel good in the moment, but it can drain your energy reserves too quickly. Instead, aim for a controlled yet confident pace that feels sustainable. You should be moving efficiently and comfortably, knowing you’ve got plenty left in the tank for later. Trust your training, settle into your rhythm, and focus on running smart.

Kilometres Two and Three: Building the Effort

As you move into the middle kilometres, it’s time to gently increase your effort. This is the section where the race starts to feel more challenging, but you should still be in control. Keep your pace consistent and start applying a little more pressure. Think of these kilometres as the “engine room” of your race—you’re laying the groundwork for a strong finish. Stay mentally focused and keep your form sharp to conserve energy for the final push.

The Fourth Kilometre: Decision Time

By the time you hit the fourth kilometre, the race is truly on. This is where you need to make a decision: can you push harder, or are you hanging on? If you’ve paced yourself well, now’s the time to start increasing your speed and testing your limits. Embrace the discomfort—this is what you’ve trained for. Keep your eyes on the runners ahead and use them as targets to chase down. Every step you take brings you closer to the finish line.

The Final Kilometre: Empty the Tank

The last kilometre is where champions are made. Your legs might feel heavy, your breathing ragged and laboured, but this is the moment to give it everything you’ve got. Focus on driving your arms, maintaining your stride, and keeping your eyes locked on the finish line. Dig deep, find that extra gear, and push through the pain. The harder you push now, the faster you’ll reach the end, and the more rewarding it will feel when you cross the line.

Celebrate Your Effort

When you finish, take a moment to catch your breath and celebrate your achievement. Whether you set a personal best, outpaced your training partner, the winner of our first 5km championship race or simply gave it your all, the effort you put in is what matters most. Our inaugural 5km Club Championships is about more than just competition—it’s about bringing our community together, testing our limits, and having fun in the process.
